Following my retirement from running Photographic Holidays, I now offer one-to-one tuition.
I am based near the Surrey/Kent County border not far from London, but willing to travel within the UK provided reasonable travel and hotel expenses, where applicable, are honoured by the student. I do not provide transport and my fees reflect this. I meet the student at a prearranged location to explore an area in-depth.
Tuition is based on creative photography of landscapes and architecture. I do not cover detailed tuition on the technical workings of a digital camera; therefore, the student should at least have a basic knowledge and understanding of their camera. Instead, I offer guidance on composition and how to see a picture with traditional skills, such as apertures, shutter-speeds, depth-of-field, and the importance of computer software in post-production.
Students should be able to walk on public footpaths, where the ground may be uneven and hilly. Unless the shoot is in a town or city, boots are essential for country walking and suitable clothing for inclement weather. Bring a walking stick if you feel more comfortable with one, maybe an umbrella too! I will carry a first-aid kit, but not medicines. The amount of camera gear is optional but remember it must be carried for the whole shoot, preferably in a camera bag that is waterproof. What I offer can be successfully achieved with a high-quality digital camera and a midrange zoom lens. Tripods optional, but I rely on image stabilisers in cameras and lenses for outdoor shoots on the move. I believe in ‘less is more’ as it focusses the mind! Smartphone tuition is not provided, but the student is free to use one for record purposes.
Fee for a day’s shoot lasting up to 6 hours (10am to 5pm), with a break for lunch, is £200, half day £125, plus expenses. Other times by special arrangement, which may be subject to different fees, especially if it involves overnight accommodation. A non-refundable deposit of £75 is required at the time of booking. Payment by bank transfer to a UK bank, details provided at time of booking.
Before a shoot students are asked to complete a booking form with contact details, level of expertise and expectations.
